About Us

Our History

The Oakhurst Center for Community was formed by community activists seeking to create a space that encourages connection and collaboration across the barriers of current society. The vision arose from the history of the space, which has been the campus of Oakhurst Baptist Church for over a hundred years. Dating from the 1960s, the OBC congregation was at the forefront in addressing racial, gender, and economic equality. A coalition of groups from the broader community, including representatives of major faiths and non- profits in the Atlanta area focused on connecting under-resourced groups with family support, job training and community connections, is building on and expanding that history. The objective is to broaden the ability to break down cultural barriers and build bridges that last lifetimes
